Why Claritin-D® is behind the pharmacy counter

  • Pseudoephedrine, which Claritin-D® contains, is an active ingredient that effectively relieves tough nasal congestion. What is the difference between Claritin® and Claritin-D®?

Both Claritin® and Claritin-D® relieve allergy symptoms: Sneezing, runny nose, itchy, watery eyes and itching of the nose and throat. Claritin-D® also has a nasal decongestant to relieve nasal congestion, due to cold or allergies, and sinus pressure.

    Where can I purchase Claritin-D®?

Claritin-D® is available behind the counter at your local pharmacy, without a prescription in most states.

Why do I have to sign/show ID for Claritin-D®? Why is there a limit on the amount of Claritin-D® I can buy?

Claritin-D® and other pseudoephedrine-containing products are controlled by the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005. This act requires that consumers show valid identification before being allowed to purchase these products and also places a limit on the amount of product that can be purchased within a given timeframe. Some states place stricter controls on these products, including the requirement that products containing pseudoephedrine can only be purchased by prescription.

Why is Claritin-D® behind the pharmacy counter?

Claritin-D® contains pseudoephedrine as an active ingredient. The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005 was signed into law to regulate retail over-the-counter sales of pseudoephedrine because of its use in the manufacture of illegal drugs. By law, all products containing pseudoephedrine must now be sold behind the pharmacy counter. However, in most states, products containing pseudoephedrine remain available without a prescription.

    When should I take Claritin-D®?

You can take Claritin-D® when your allergy symptoms and nasal congestion act up. Claritin-D® 24 Hour can be taken once every 24 hours and Claritin-D® 12 Hour can be taken once every 12 hours.

At what temperature should I store Claritin-D® Tablets?

    Store between 20º to 25º C (68º to 77º F).
